SAN ANTONIO -- For many soldiers, sailors, Airmen, and Marines, losing the use of a limb can have lasting effects that go just beyond the physical.
"They're bitter, they're angry," said Lonnie Hannah, coach of the San Antonio Rampage Sled Hockey Team and former U.S. paralympian. "They're kind of like 'Why is this happening to me?'"
The Rampage sled hockey team is comprised mostly of wounded warriors being treated, or having been treated, at Brook Army Medical Center. The sport is turning out to be the perfect remedy for service members struggling psychologically with their disability.
"If you've got a guy that's ... upset about his injury, he's got aggression," said Chris Leverkuhn, wounded warrior and sled hockey player, "Well, it lets him take it out."
"We're out here checking. We're out here ... getting very physical," said Hannah. "And it's hockey!"
This weekend, the Rampage sled hockey team will be playing in a tournament against teams from all over the Midwest.
Their schedule is as follows:
Friday, January 8th, 7 pm vs. Saint Louis at Northwoods Ice & Golf Center
Saturday, January 9th, 8 am vs. Minnesota at Northwoods Ice & Golf Center
Saturday, January 9th, 3:30 pm vs. Chicago at AT&T Center (Prior to the San Antonio Rampage AHL game)
