SAN ANTONIO -- Gas prices are spiking again. At a gas station near McCreeles Market, the marquee first read $2.49 a gallon. It quickly jumped six cents to $2.55 mere moments later.
Jerry Sharum said he thought he was getting a deal when he pulled in to get gas but found out he was too late.
"I told my partner that was riding with me, 'We need to go ahead and get some gas because it's cheap here,'" he said. "I pulled in and it's 6 cents more than it was when we drove by 10 minutes earlier."
According to www.gasprices.com, prices nationally at the pump jumped 4.7 cents per gallon in the past week. In San Antonio, it's up an average of 3.7 cents. To make matters worse, the price hike comes just in time for spring break.
Tony Huron, a local driver, said, he sees gas prices rise around holidays.
"Every time Memorial day comes along ... the gas always goes up," he said. "After that, it goes down again. "
Experts have said, however, it's not the holidays that are to blame, but an increase in the price of crude oil and demand for fuel. If crude oil stays the same, gas prices will keep rising.
"We need the gas, we have to get it," local driver Pedro Ramirez said. "I don't like it, but what can we do about it?"
The situation could be worse: Drivers in Honolulu are paying $3.33 per gallon.
