A man shot by a police officer on Monday night after striking the officer with a car was still recovering on Tuesday.

The incident happened at an Exxon gas station on the corner of Roosevelt and Southeast Military Drive, leaving two police officers, a suspect, and an innocent bystander hurt.

The man shot during the incident is 18-year-old Gabriel Naranjo.

Naranjo's family told KSAT 12 on Tuesday that the officer should not have shot him and that Naranjo had to undergo surgery to stop the bleeding.

"One of the main arteries in his arm ... was torn or something," said John Naranjo, the suspect's brother. "So, the whole time he was there bleeding. He could have bled to death."

Gabriel Naranjo is charged with two counts of attempted capital murder. This, after a struggle with police officers at an Exxon on Roosevelt.

Police are reporting that an officer was trying to help an elderly man who was being harassed by three men. The officer was able to get one of the men into a headlock, but the other two, including Gabriel Naranjo, drove away.

Naranjo returned to the scene and another officer, who was exiting the store, saw the commotion and drew his gun, ordering him to get out of the vehicle.

Police said instead, Naranjo gunned the car toward the officer, striking him..

According to the police report, after Officer Michael McFarland was struck and on the ground when he fired his weapon, hitting Naranjo in his right arm. Family members tell KSAT 12 Naranjo was not armed and the officer should not have fired.

"I think he was just trying to get away and ... I don't think the cop should have done that," said Alexis Cuevas, a family member.

Cuevas also said Naranjo wasn't wearing his glasses and probably could not see where he was driving, but that they have warned him to stay away from the wrong crowd.

"(I told him) your friends are going to get you into something and you're going to get shot and that's exactly what happened," said John Naranjo.

The second man, who has not been identified, will be charged with aggravated assault. Charges are pending against a third man.

As per departmental policy, McFarland, a 10-year veteran, was placed on administrative leave.
