SAN ANTONIO -- They went with a couple of goals in mind. The first: to help, and that's just what David Birdy and his wife, Laura, did for the past month in Haiti.
David, a Realtor, put his admin know-how to work, while Laura, a nurse, volunteered in a local hospital.
"Unbelievable, miraculous," said Laura Birdy about the trip.
The other goal: to look for the mother of a 17-year-old Haitian student, Fedelin, who has been living with the Birdys for several months. Afraid to let her travel with them, the Birdys said they had hoped to find her mother safe and sound.
Another mission accomplished.
But perhaps their most difficult and rewarding task was one they never expected to take on.
They decided to adopt two Haitian orphans.
"They let a lot go, then a few go and there was maybe a list of five that were signed by the prime minister," said David Birdy, of the adoption process.
When all was said and done, the Birdys came home with two new young girls: 4-year-old Lonise and 12-year-old Christelle, both of whom landed at the San Antonio International Airport with their new family on Wednesday night.
"Before May we had one child," said Laura Birdy. "Now we have four."
Lonise expressed the joy of going from having so little to having so much like only a child could.
"When we walked into a Super Wal-Mart in Orlando, she was laughing saying, 'Juice, juice,'" said Birdy.
