Music Series Pays Tribute To 'Rib King'

First Concert Held Wednesday Night Since Randy Goss' Death

Live music returned to the patio of The County Line BBQ on Interstate 10 Wednesday night as the restaurant kicked off its weekly concert series.

The popular free concerts were the brain-child of County Line co-owner Randy Goss, who was killed in a car accident in February.

"Randy's really smiling down from heaven because he loved this thing, this was his baby," said Julie Goss, Randy's wife.

Before the main act took the stage, Julie Goss paid tribute to her late husband known throughout Texas as simply "The Rib King."

"Randy was larger than life and loved you guys and loved coming out here and loved talking to all you," Goss told the crowd. "He loved that every place we would go people would yell 'the Rib King' and he would adore it."

Goss was killed on Feb. 3, when his car was swept away at a low water crossing just a few miles from his home.

After the accident, many wondered if the Wednesday night concert series created by Randy 10 years ago would live on. Julie said there was never a doubt.

Randy started the event to bring in customers and to support musicians who were making the kind of music he loved so much.

"We both have a passion for music, especially Texas music, and it was just another way to get people in," Goss said.

The concert series helped the restaurant sell plenty of barbecue but it also helped the community. Instead of charging a cover for the bands, Randy only asked customers to donate a can of food to the San Antonio Food Bank.

"It's a pretty cool thing when you think about this win, win, win situation," said Eric Cooper, director of the San Antonio Food Bank. "Everybody walks away benefiting from a guy that just set the table for the community and those that went hungry."

In the first nine years of the concert series, it's estimated customers donated more than $700,000 worth of food to the Food Bank.

Julie Goss and her business partners with the County Line BBQ plan to keep the concert series going for a long time to come, she said. It's the best way they know how to honor the memory of a Texas legend.
