SAN ANTONIO -- The family of 18-year-Shanika Sanford said they were pleased that the trial of her killer, 26-year-old Charles Reese, was over. And satisfied with the verdict.
After deliberating for more than two hours, the jury decided that life in prison and a $5,000 fine was the appropriate sentence for Reese.
Testimony during the trial, which began over a week ago, showed that Reese and Sanford had been married just two weeks. Witnesses said the couple had been arguing outside a Northside apartment on the afternoon of March 10, 2009. When she refused his orders to get into a car, he pulled a pistol and shot her six times in the chest, neck and head at point blank range.
As Reese was led from the courtroom after Judge Lori Valenzuela read the jury's verdict, he shouted an obscenity at Sanford's relatives. Later, speaking outside the courtroom, Margaret Sanford, the victim's grandmother, said, "That's the kind of person he is. No remorse."
Reese must serve 30 years in prison, day for day, before he is even eligible for parole.
