SAN ANTONIO -- The daughter of a woman killed in a crash involving a San Antonio police officer said she's frustrated she can't get better information about how the crash happened and who was at fault.
Sylvia Paez said her aunt, the passenger in the car her mother was driving, told her the car driven by Sgt. Gabriel Trevino hit them from behind. But in the official accident report, Trevino stated Rosita Davila's car hit him. The report suggests both drivers may have been at fault, saying Trevino may have contributed to the accident by failing to yield right-of-way, and Davila may have contributed to the accident by failing to use evasive action.
Paez, though, is skeptical.
"It's just really shocking to the family that they would put the blame on my mother," said Paez. "The accusation they made about not using evasive action. My mother was a 64-year-old woman. I mean, what type of evasive action are they asking us to know?"
Paez said Davila's funeral was Wednesday, and her family is still grieving. At the same time, she said, they are desperately seeking answers, and getting few, if any. She said she's called police several times, asking for more information about the crash, but has yet to hear back. She said she suspects the police department may be withholding information because an officer was involved.
"From the moment I arrived at the scene, I just felt there was something they were hiding or that I didn't need to know," said Paez.
Trevino was a public information officer and spokesman for the police department for nine years. He currently serves as a liaison between SAPD and the FBI. He has not commented publicly about the accident, and has not been charged with a crime.
