SAN ANTONIO -- A 19-year-old student from St. Mary's University was killed in a rollover crash early Friday on the city's Northwest Side.
Police found the victim, Daniel Perea, inside a car in a ditch at Bandera and Callaghan roads at 4:30 a.m.
Lt. Michael King of the San Antonio Police Department said it appears that Perea was speeding when he lost control of his car, which went down an embankment and hit a protruding concrete manhole covering, causing it to flip several times.
Alcohol didn't appear to be a factor in the crash, King said.
A news release from the university said that students, faculty and staff gathered Friday morning to remember and mourn the freshman student from Brownsville during a reflection service.
