SAN ANTONIO -- As she stands near a religious shrine in her yard, Maria Rodriguez remembers her best friend, Rosita Davila.
"It was her favorite thing to do. Come and stand here and pray" Rodriguez said while fighting back tears.
Rodriguez was riding in Davila's sport utility vehicle on Loop 1604 early Sunday morning when their vehicle collided with an unmarked police car driven by San Antonio Police Department Sgt. Gabe Trevino. Rodriguez said that she remembers little of the crash, which sent the SUV spinning out of control as it flipped over.
"I woke up. And I realized what had happened" Rodriguez said. "I saw her there, but I couldn't wake her up. I couldn’t do anything. I felt so hopeless."
Rodriguez said that at the time she did not realize the other driver was a police officer.
"I said that whoever hit us, at least they could have come and helped us," she said. "I don't want an apology from him. An apology will not bring her back. I just want justice done."
SAPD policy forbids Trevino from talking about the crash. He is on administrative duty pending the investigation.
A preliminary police report said that both drivers shared the blame for the wreck. Trevino for failing to yield and Davila for not taking evasive action.
