SAN ANTONIO -- Many people may not realize it, but Stinson Airport plays a huge part in the economy on the city's South Side.
"Stinson employs more than 400 people and has an economic impact of more than $30 million annually," said San Antonio City Manager Sheryl Sculley.
A project to lengthen the airport's 9/27 runway to just beyond 5,000 feet has just been completed. The new length doesn't really open the airport to bigger aircraft, but it will now show up on more corporate aviator's radars.
"They typically prefer to come into runways that are at least 5,000 feet," said Tim O'Krongley, Assistant Aviation Director for the City of San Antonio. "In fact, their database software really doesn't even show airports that are less than 5,000 feet. So, it kind of puts us in a new database. "
More corporate aviators should translate into dollars for the city.
"The more planes that land, the more fees the city gets," said Richard Johnson, spokesman for the San Antonio Aviation Department."The more attractive we are to businesses, the better it is for all of San Antonio and the Southside."
