SAN ANTONIO -- Twenty-six-year-old Cesar Rodriguez' grandfather remembers him as a good boy, who regularly came by to work on his grandparents' home, and do their yard work. Late Friday night, police called to notify Rodriguez' family of his death.
According to Officer Matthew Porter, a spokesman for the San Antonio Police Department, Rodriguez was riding in a car with friends, when one of the men in the car touched a woman inappropriately. One of the other men became angry, and an argument ensued that eventually spilled over into the parking lot at the Olmos Club Apartments near Basse and McCullough. Porter said Rodriguez tried to break up the fight, and when he did, a man came out of a nearby apartment with a gun. When Rodriguez began walking in that man's direction, Porter said the suspect fired one shot, hitting Rodriguez in the throat. The wound proved to be fatal.
"The whole family is devastated," said Manuel Rodriguez, Cesar's grandfather, through a translator. "He was a good kid. From work to home, he never had any enemies."
Manuel Rodriguez said his grandson was a hard worker and a family man, with three children. His violent death caught the entire family off guard.
"If it were a bad guy, looking for trouble, it would have been one thing," said Rodriguez. "But he (Cesar) never looked for problems."
Police are still looking for two suspects connected to the shooting, both the man who started the argument in the car, and the man who fired the gun. Both men ran from the scene and evaded capture.
