SAN ANTONIO -- It's spring break for many in San Antonio, and for some, that means it's time to head to the beach.
However, some students are sticking around town to help some local nonprofit groups.
More than 200 students were hard at work on Wednesday, nailing boards, starting walls and helping Habitat for Humanity of San Antonio finish off another 16 homes.
"It amazes me that we have this many young people all over the place that want to come out and give of their time, rather than going to the beach and doing those kinds of things for Spring Break," said Shelly LaFleur, a marketing associate with Habitat for Humanity of San Antonio.
Students from across the country and San Antonio worked together on the Habitat neighborhood.
"This was just a perfect opportunity," said Jesse Arredondo, a San Antonio College student. "I've been wanting to do this for a couple of years, but the time hasn't fit. Since I had the whole week off, I said, 'I'm going to do this because I can always go to the beach in the summer.'"
LaFleur said Habitat, which generally has more volunteers on the weekends, has had a great response every day this spring break week.
"This is great for us because we work with very needy families, families that couldn't otherwise own their own homes," said LaFleur. "So these students and college students are helping us put that much more needy families into homes."
Meals on Wheels of San Antonio is also getting a boost this week from student volunteers.
"We have volunteers in high school, all the way up to college," said Jerry Arellano, Marketing Director of Meals on Wheels of San Antonio. "We do have staff as well as teachers that are participating. We have an overwhelming response and a lot of volunteers this week, so, we're really excited about it."
However, with more than 3,200 meals to get ready each day, Arellano says they are hoping even more students will come out and volunteer.
