2009 SA Crime Statistics Released

Homicide, Vehicle Thefts Down; Rapes Up

City of San Antonio crime statistics are out for 2009 and overall the news is good.

"Our police, city manager, have worked over the last year ... to bring crime down in San Antonio," said Mayor Julian Castro.

On Wednesday, city leaders learned crime is down in almost every major category.

Homicides are down by 14 percent, aggravated assaults by 30 percent and vehicle thefts by 27 percent.

Robberies, burglaries and thefts are down 2 percent, 3 percent and 4 percent, respectively.

Only one major category saw an increase in incidents: rapes, up 48 percent since 2008.

"Working with the Rape Crisis Center, we believe it's more of rapes are being reported, than not being reported," said San Antonio Police chief William McManus.

Miriam Elizondo, with the Rape Crisis Center, said the jump could be due to rapes "being appropriately identified now as rapes, versus other types of assaults, and also that arrests are made as well."

Elizondo said they have seen a 26 percent increase in the number of rape victims seeking counseling, but they've seen no significant increase in the number of rape victims treated at area hospitals.

"With the numbers that we see at the hospitals, I would have to say no, it wouldn't have been an increase of 48 percent," said Elizondo.

McManus said he attributes the decrease in every other category to the many crime-fighting initiatives launched in 2009.
