SAN ANTONIO -- In a down economy, businesses are trying just about anything to get noticed and it is especially apparent in the Stone Oak area. As a result, some of those businesses are now taking advertising to the streets.
Lately, walking, talking and even spinning ads are now targeting drivers stuck in Stone Oak traffic.
"Hey, how about a couple of coupons to eat at Trilogy Pizza right over there," said Terry Corser, as she handed out coupons to Stone Oak drivers. "Come see us."
Corser wore a chef hat and smock during her duties and kept nearby a colorful sign advertising the pizza place.
The street corner seems to be the latest trend in advertising.
"Everybody's trying to get noticed," said John Gladders, owner of Trilogy Pizza and Bistro. Gladders said he is trying to sell a few more pizzas and said traditional mailers are not working as well any more. He said the street corner is.
"We did have a very busy week last week actually, so there was actually some uptick in sales," said Gladders.
Kristopher Skogg is a professional sign spinner working for Aarow Advertising, a company that employs sign spinners at franchises around the world.
"We have what's called the 'Aarrow attention method' and (it) is a sequence of actions that we perform to get people's attention," said Skogg as he flipped and spun around at the intersection of Sonterra Boulevard and Stone Oak Parkway.
Aarow's local leader said like radio, this advertising gets to people in traffic.
"But you can't turn us off like a radio, so we're right there, we're pointing, we're smiling, we're waving, we're getting your attention," said Daniel Peavy, president of Aarrow San Antonio.
Affordable Granite Solutions was one local business featured recently on one of Aarrow's spinning street corner signs.
"We've gotten so many calls on this, it's incredible," said Kathy Vazquez, whose father runs Affordable Granite Solutions.
Sign spinners make good money after finishing boot camp: up to $15 an hour the first year.
Of course, it is hot, sometimes dangerous work and spinners have to be coordinated.
Some drivers like to watch the street corner antics, but some said they do not know what to think. At least one driver called police to report the spinning as a distraction.
However, it is legal, it works and it is the latest trend in advertising.
