Car Crashes Into Jim's Restaurant

Patron, Waitress Hurt After Vehicle Plows Into Building

POSTED: 2:47 pm CST November 14, 2003

Two people were injured Friday morning after a car crashed into a Jim's Restaurant on the North Side.

Witnesses told police a woman in her mid-50s was reversing her car out of the restaurant parking lot at San Pedro Avenue and Ramsey at 8:30 a.m. when the car backed into a pole.

"(She) panicked and put the car in drive," said Sgt. Steven Markgraf, of the San Antonio Police Department. "And accidentally struck the gas pedal instead of the brake pedal."

The car then plowed into the front of the restaurant. An elderly man sitting in one of the booths was treated for cuts to his hand. A waitress suffered a broken leg.

"There was just incredible screaming," said Alvin Whitehead, who was eating breakfast at the time of the accident.

The driver was shaken up but didn't suffer any injuries. Police said she will not be ticketed.

The restaurant manager said more people could have been injured if the accident would have happened earlier in the morning when it's busier.

Damage to the restaurant is estimated at $50,000. Repairs are expected to completed by the end of the weekend.
