3 killed as wind-fueled fire spreads to 5 homes near San Antonio
Mother, 1-year-old twin sons, killed on Old Pearsall Road in SW Bexar County
A woman identified by family members as 31-year-old Roxanne Cortez Moreno died along with her twin 14-month-old sons, Orlean and Daniel, in a wind-fueled fire in southwest Bexar County Monday afternoon.
Wind gusts of up to 50 miles per hour caused the fire in the 8100 block of Old Pearsall Road.
The blaze was believed to have started at Moreno’s home around 2 p.m., and then spread to two homes nearby, as well as two homes across the street.
“I came outside and looked across the street and the house was on fire,” said Enrique Pena, who lives across the street and noticed a black plume of smoke cover his kitchen window.
“I went to my house, tried to get the important papers, pictures but I didn’t. I couldn’t even do that,” added Angelica Salas. “My house just went up in flames so fast.”
Salas’ mother’s home was also damaged by the fire and her 83-year-old grandmother was treated for smoke inhalation.
Arson investigators arrived at the scene around 7:30 p.m. nearly five hours after the fire began. They were called shortly after the bodies were found.
Fire officials said several agencies were called to help battle the blaze amid high winds. A cause for the fatal fire was unknown Monday evening.
Family members of the victims and others who lost their homes used Southwest High School as a temporary shelter while they waited for the Red Cross to assist them with supplies and possibly shelter for the evening.
