3 killed in San Antonio group home fire
Amistad Residential Facility on West Norwood houses mentally disabled patients
Three people died and another person was badly burned after a fire broke out at the Amistad Residential Facility in the 300 block of West Norwood, San Antonio fire officials said.
Fire officials said a neighbor called 911 around 10:40 p.m. Wednesday to report heavy flames and smoke coming from the facility, which is a group home for mentally disabled people.
"The front of the place was engulfed with 20-foot flames coming out at least," said neighbor Robert Carpenter.
Fire officials said a total of 13 people lived at the home and nine were able to escape.
"My friend woke me up, there was a lot of black smoke. We went downstairs and there was a big flame of fire. I jumped out the back window in the back." said resident Paul Galvez.
Two victims were pronounced dead at the scene, the other later died at the hospital. The fourth victim was listed in critical condition, fire officials said. The names of the victims have not been released.
The arson unit is investigating the cause. Damages were estimated at $170,000.
