SAN ANTONIO -

Three local school districts voted Tuesday night to participate in Mayor Julian Castro's Pre-K 4 SA program.

Harlandale, Southwest and San Antonio Independent School Districts all approved drafted agreements with the city detailing each party’s responsibilities in the program.

Voters approved the measure in November to raise the sales tax one-eighth of a cent to fund full-day pre-kindergarten for thousands of 4-year-old children.

Leslie Price, SAISD spokesperson, says the district worked with the city on the terms of the agreement.

“Everything from what the district would contribute financially per student to the city’s different responsibilities,” Price said. “And we see this as a living document, something that we could continue to work on as the program progresses and moves down the road.”

Price says the Pre-K 4 SA program would supplement the district’s current early education programs that serve 5,000 students ages 3 and 4.

The program will also establish four pre-k centers that are open to families throughout the city.

The locations for two of those centers have already been determined. One will be located at I-10 & Medical, while the other is on the south central side of Brooks City Base. Both are set to open in August.
