SAN ANTONIO -- The prognosis remains grim Thursday for a kitten that was tossed out a pickup on the Northeast Side.
A veterinarian caring for the critically injured kitten at the Animal Defense League said the animal has severe brain damage.
"It's not looking very good," said Melissa Draper, a veterinarian. "She's coming around a little bit, but she's still showing signs of brain damage. I don't know how she's going to do."
Draper said a decision may be made Thursday afternoon to put the kitten to sleep.
An ADL employee picked up the animal after she saw someone throw the animal out of a pickup Wednesday afternoon on Nacogdoches Road, near the ADL facilities.
"I didn't even know what to think," said Athena Limon, who picked up the kitten. "I couldn't believe it was happening, but my first concern was her and her safety."
ADL officials said they don't know if the person who threw the animal was a man who became irate after he was turned away with a stray kitten. The facility currently has more than 80 cats.
ADL officials said even though the facility is full, they may be able to provide an alternative place for a stray. Residents are urged to call the ADL at (210) 655-1481 prior to taking an animal to the facility.
The summer season is typically a time of the year when the stray population is high, ADL officials said.
