Hundreds of people packed a West Side church Thursday night to pay their respects to Robert "Pequin" Quiroga, the first San Antonio boxer to win a world boxing title, who was stabbed to death earlier this week.

Mourners formed a long line outside Holy Rosary Catholic Church more than an hour before a rosary was recited in honor of the 34-year-old father of two.

"He was a good man," a man in line said. "He was somebody (who) was very significant to the town. You gotta understand a man like that put S.A. on the map."

"Everybody liked him," a woman said.

Some of the fans who attended the rosary wore a T-shirt that had an image from Quiroga's boxing days.

While mourners remembered Quiroga, police continued looking for Ricky Merla, 38, a former member of the motorcycle club Bandidos, who is accused of stabbing Quiroga multiple times.

Quiroga was found bleeding in front of a home in the 3500 block of Fallen Leaf early Monday. He died at University Hospital.

A funeral Mass for Quiroga will be celebrated Friday at 11 a.m. at Holy Rosary Catholic Church.
