Prosecutors Plan To Try Teens As Adults
Pair Accused Of Killing Teen's Mother

SAN ANTONIO -- A prosecutor said Thursday she will file the necessary paperwork to request the transfer of a murder case involving two teenagers from juvenile to adult court.
Bexar County Assistant District Attorney Jill Mata said she plans to file the petition within the next two weeks in hopes that David Childress, 14, and his neighbor, James Hartmangruber, 14, will stand trial as adults in connection with the strangulation death of Childress' mother.
"It's a very, very serious case," Mata said in an interview with KSAT 12 News following a juvenile detention hearing for the suspects. "Based on the conduct of both the individuals and what happened in this case, I think it's appropriate."
Mata said a certification hearing would be held a month after the paperwork is filed to determine if the teens will be prosecuted in an adult court.
In the meantime, psychological tests will be conducted on the boys, who were ordered by a judge Thursday to remain in juvenile detention.
The suspects were arrested Sept. 22 after they were caught dragging the victim's body down a stairwell at a near North Side apartment complex.
Spooked by a witness, the boys fled San Antonio but surrendered to authorities in Bandera.
