Pair Expected To Be Tried As Adults

SAN ANTONIO -- A 14-year-old boy, with the help of his neighbor, planned to kill his mother one week before police found her body, a friend of the two teens said.
"He just said he was going to hit her on the back of the head with something," said Leslie Guevara, who appeared at a juvenile detention hearing Thursday for David Childress and James Hartmangruber. "I can't believe they would actually go do something like this."
Guevara, who attended the hearing in support of the teens, said she was still in shock over the strangulation death of Meda Childress, the mother of David Childress. On Sept. 22, police found the victim's body on a stairwell at a near North Side apartment complex, where the Childress' lived. The boys surrendered to authorities in Bandera after briefly fleeing San Antonio.
Guevara also said her best friend told her that David Childress' mother and father abused him and believes that Hartmangruber "just went along with it."
"Jimmy is a really good friend," she said. "He wouldn't let a person go down. He'll go with (Childress) ... so that's what I think Jimmy is doing."
During the detention hearing, it was revealed that Childress is on suicide watch.
Also, prosecutors are close to filing paperwork to have the teens tried as adults.
