Project Would Produce 4500 Jobs

SAN ANTONIO -- The city's biggest competitor for a major expansion by Washington Mutual believes the project is headed to San Antonio.
"We've been submitting proposal after proposal, but we haven't heard from them in a while," a source close to negotiations told
The Oklahoman on Wednesday. "It looks like they've worked things out in San Antonio."
Oklahoma City is believed to be San Antonio's main competition for the proposed regional sales and service center. Sources tell KSAT News that the project would bring at least 4500 new jobs to the city in three to five years.
"It's good to see one of our primary competitors has thrown in the towel," said Mayor Ed Garza. "But until we hear something firm, we're not celebrating."
The city and county are using financial incentives to lure the project to San Antonio. A state fund could also be used for additional incentives, a tool that Oklahoma does not have.
"It's going to be good-paying jobs, a lot of jobs," Bexar County Judge Nelson Wolff told KSAT News on Wednesday. "It will have a big impact on San Antonio."
Wolff said a final decision is several weeks away. Washington Mutual laid off several hundred workers in San Antonio last year.
