8 Firefighters Suspended For Fire Pole Incident

Eight San Antonio firefighters were suspended for their roles in an incident at a West Side fire station in October in which a woman fell off a fire pole during a late-night party with firefighters.

Fire Station No. 10

Two of the suspensions were indefinite, meaning the firefighters probably will never return to the department.

The other six suspensions range from 10 to 60 days.

"It's certainly a disappointment," said Fire Chief Robert Ojeda. "But -- all of them -- in my meetings with them, agreed there was a lapse of judgment on their part," he added.

Grace Estrada, 30, a USAA employee, said some off-duty firefighters invited her and several other women to Fire Station No. 10 for a late-night party last October.

Estrada, who is suing the City of San Antonio, said she hurt her back after a firefighter asked her to climb on his shoulders so they could slide down a fire pole together.

According to the lawsuit, Estrada lost her grip and fell about 12 feet to a tile floor.

"I think what he (fire chief) did was appropriate by doing the suspensions," said Estrada's attorney, Kevin Stouwie. "Unfortunately, I still think he hasn't been given complete and honest information from his own firefighters," he said.

According to state law, the maximum award Estrada could receive is $250,000.
