SAN ANTONIO -- A young dachshund that was tossed from a vehicle and left to die on the side of a rural road is recuperating Tuesday at a North Side veterinary clinic.
Oscar Ojeda said he was driving near his home on Old Corpus Christi Road when he saw someone toss a small dog from a passing car Monday night.
Ojeda pulled over and found the severely injured dog lying on the side of the road.
"She was sitting on an ant pile," Ojeda said. "She was full of ants, had a broken jaw. She was scared, bloody, and dehydrated, so I pulled over real quick and I picked her up. I didn't know what to do."
Ojeda said that a good Samaritan came forward to offer to pay for the dog's veterinarian bills.
The dog, which was named C.C. for the initials of the name of the road she was found, was resting peacefully Tuesday on pain medication and oxygen at the clinic.
Dr. Fred Williams, a veterinarian, said C.C. had a jaw and a hip fracture. Williams said he wants to stabilize the dog before performing surgery.
"As far as I can tell, everything looks very fixable," Williams said. "We should be able to make her nice and functional and pain-free."
Ojeda said he plans on adopting the dog and will rename her Christi.
