SAN ANTONIO -- A 9-month-old baby was listed in serious condition Monday after he and his mother were wounded in a hail of gunfire on the West Side.
Witnesses told police that a group of men were arguing outside a home at the intersection of Fairshire and Five Palms at 3 a.m. when a man believed to be the intended target of the shooting called his mother to come pick him up.
When a maroon sport utility vehicle pulled up to the home, gunfire erupted, wounding the baby, Jacob Valdez, and his mother, Beatrice Ledesma, 17.
Police said Ledesma was holding her son when a bullet pierced her shoulder and struck the infant in the neck.
Ledesma was listed in good condition at Wilford Hall Medical Center, where her son is also recovering.
Police said detectives found between 50 and 70 shell casings at the scene.
"There were a lot of bullets flying around the neighborhood," said police spokesman Gabe Treviño. "We're just very fortunate that nobody else was injured."
Treviño said the victims probably knew the shooter. No arrests have been made, but police are questioning several people.
Detectives are also trying to determine if some shots were fired from the SUV and said that some witnesses are refusing to cooperate.
Police have made frequent visits to the neighborhood where the shooting occurred.
In 2005, police have responded to 37 disturbances, 12 assaults and two shootings.
