SAN ANTONIO -- Child Protective Services officials on Monday removed a 9-month-old baby from his mother's custody as the infant recovers from a gunshot wound to the neck.
Jacob Valdez was wounded as his mother, Beatrice Ledesma, 17, held him while they sat in a vehicle that was riddled with bullets early Monday at the intersection of Fairshire and Five Palms.
Ledesma and another woman had gone to pick up Ledesma's husband, who had called them to pick him up, after he was involved in an argument with a group of men.
Valdez was listed Monday in serious condition at a local hospital. Ledesma was released after suffering a wound to one of her arms.
"I thought he was dead," Ledesma said in an interview Monday night with KSAT 12 News.
CPS officials said they will place the baby in foster care after he's released from the hospital and the investigation is completed.
Ledesma said her baby is being taking away "for all the wrong reasons."
"I just want get my baby back," she said.
Police are continuing to interview witnesses and potential suspects but have not made any arrests.
