SAN ANTONIO -- Bexar County commissioners on Tuesday approved a petition to create a special taxing district for a proposed PGA resort to be built on land in northern Bexar County.
Commissioners also voted to hold a public hearing on Sept. 1 for the proposed tax district.
The proposal will still go to a public vote, but only a few residents who live in the development area will cast ballots.
Construction on two golf courses will begin in the spring and are scheduled to open in early 2008.
The resort plans include a 1,000-room Marriott Hotel, which is scheduled to open in June 2008.
Developers said they're pleased to see the project move forward.
"We kind of stuck through the tough times when the PGA wouldn't come to the table and Marriott wouldn't come to the table, and we kept prodding along. I think we got it done," said John Pierret, a spokesman for Lumbermen's Investment Corp.
Lots in three subdivisions have been sold to builders.
Construction is set to begin this fall.
