SAPD Arrests Man Who Allegedly Lied About Shooting

POSTED: Thursday, August 25, 2005
UPDATED: 9:55 am CDT August 25, 2005

San Antonio police arrested a 19-year-old man Wednesday on perjury charges in connection with information he gave to detectives about a shooting that left his infant wounded.

An arrest warrant for Abelardo Valdez was based on false sworn statements he made to police that resulted in the arrest of Joe Garcia on Aug. 16.

Following the arrest, Valdez recanted his story and Garcia was released from jail due to insufficient evidence the next day.

Police believe that Valdez made the sworn statements with the intent to deceive and knew what the statements meant.

Valdez is the father of 9-month-old Jacob Valdez, who was injured in a shooting that occurred Aug. 15 in the 5900 block of Fairshire.

The investigation into the shooting continues and anyone with information on the case is urged to call the SAPD's Homicide Unit at (210) 207-7635.
