SAN ANTONIO -- A San Antonio police officer and another man were shot and wounded in an apparent drug deal and hostage rescue that went bad, according to police.
Police said they received a call from a distraught mother who said her son was kidnapped after he allegedly sold bad drugs to two other men.
The son called his mother to deliver ransom money.
SAPD spokesman Sgt. Gabe Trevino said although police told the mother not to comply with the kidnappers' demands, she did so anyway.
Trevino said undercover police were then forced to reveal themselves.
"The detectives are then able to hear a cell phone conversation that the mom is having with the suspects -- that they're now going to kill her son. We're having to react very quickly to this. We're waiting for a helicopter to get up. We're trying to get some patrol units. We want to see exactly what we have, but now they're at that point where they can't let the vehicle go," said Trevino.
A car chase ensued, followed by a running gun battle.
A detective suffered two gunshots to the leg, but was able to drive himself to Brooke Army Medical Center for treatment.
At one point in the chase, the man being held hostage escaped from the vehicle.
Police said he refused to comply with police orders and was shot by officers.
He was transported to Brooke Army Medical Center. His condition was not known.
Police arrested one of the alleged kidnappers at the scene.
Another suspect, Marcus Dante Thomas, turned himself into police several hours later.
