Suspect strikes vehicle, kills child while fleeing from police

SAN ANTONIO -

Five people have been charged with distributing marijuana after a suspect killed a child and injured others while fleeing from police, authorities said.

According to the San Antonio Police Department, officers were surveying a suspected drug stash house on Morin Road in East Bexar County Wednesday when David Rodriguez, 30, was seen leaving the property in a black Chevrolet Suburban.

Police said an officer tried to conduct a traffic stop on Rodriguez's vehicle as he traveled west on Highway 1604. Authorities said Rodriguez was speeding away from officers when he struck another vehicle, killing a child and injuring others.

Officer said they found about 420 pounds of marijuana Rodriguez's SUV.

Authorities said they found 670 pounds of marijuana from other vehicles that left the house and about 1,680 pounds of the drug in a shed on the property.

The four others charged in the case are John Salinas, 40, of Von Ormy, the owner of the property; Michael Gomez, 27; Brock Lassiter, 28; and Joseph Whitley, 28.

The suspects are in custody. Each faces between 10 years and life in federal prison if found guilty.
