SAN ANTONIO -- A 22-year-old man had a blood-alcohol level twice the legal limit when he crashed his speeding car into a San Antonio Police Department cruiser, killing himself and an officer, the Bexar County Medical Examiner's Office said Monday.
Preliminary toxicology tests reveal that Ismael Herrera had a blood-alcohol level of .189 or more than twice the limit in Texas of .08.
Police said that Herrera was driving in excess of 90 mph early Friday morning when his 1994 Chevrolet Caprice rear-ended the parked cruiser that Officer John Wheeler was driving.
Wheeler was parked on the shoulder of the southbound lanes of Loop 410 near Culebra Road looking for drunken drivers.
Both vehicles burst into flames, killing both men at the scene.
Juan Tejeda, a cousin of Herrera, said he wasn't surprised that Herrera was driving fast.
"He was always a go-getter," Tejeda said. "He was moving. He was in school, working, performing, had his girlfriend. So he was, you know, he had, I think, to do things kind of fast because he was doing a lot of things. He was full of life and that's part of the tragedy of it."
Herrera was also remembered as a talented musician and was scheduled to perform Sunday with a group from Palo Alto College at the International Accordion Festival at La Villita.
A rosary for Herrera will be recited Monday at 7 p.m. at Mission Park Funeral Home South. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Tuesday at 10 a.m. at St. Cecilia's Catholic Church followed by interment at Mission Park Burial Park South.
A visitation for Wheeler is scheduled for Monday and Tuesday at Porting Loring Mortuary at 1101 McCullough Avenue.
Funeral services will be held at noon Wednesday at Castle Hills First Baptist Church at 2220 Northwest Military Highway.
