SAN ANTONIO – Nearly 600 people sought relief from the cold at Haven for Hope as temperatures dipped below freezing in San Antonio Monday night.
That's about 100 more people than the shelter sees on a typical night.
"They're pretty open to, you know, getting a ride, coming in, getting out of the weather," Ron Brown, outreach manager at Haven for Hope, said.
He spent the entire night offering comfort to those with no other place to keep warm, but said not everyone wanted to go to a shelter.
"A lot of people like to try to brave it out, so I just offered what I had, some hygiene products or a blanket or coat," Brown said.
Volunteers and staff handed out warm items to as many people as they could, but with more winter nights ahead, Haven for Hope needs more outreach volunteers.
"Those who are not afraid to battle weather, go into some encampments just to befriend individuals. We're always in need for individuals to come in and help out with that cause," Brown said.
They also need more blankets and warm clothes to hand out.
