Medical Examiner Details Teacher's Death

DiMaio Testifies In Neal's Capital Murder Trial

UPDATED: 1:25 pm CST February 27, 2006

Alamo Heights teacher Diane Tilly was still alive after she was shot several times, Bexar County medical examiner Vincent DiMaio testified Monday in the trial of Ronnie Joe Neal.

DiMaio told jurors that Tilly was only wearing a T-shirt and had her hands tied behind her back with shoelaces when she was found in a field in northeast Bexar County in December 2004.

DiMaio also testified that even if Tilly would have been transported to a hospital, she likely would not have survived her wounds, including one that shattered an arm bone.

An X-ray shows a fractured arm bone Diane Tilly suffered when she was shot.

The medical examiner was among the final witnesses to testify for the prosecution before the defense takes over.

Neal's defense attorney plans to attack the credibility of Neal's teenage daughter, who testified against her father in exchange for a sentence not to exceed 30 years. If found guilty, Neal could face the death penalty for allegedly robbing, raping and killing Tilly in November 2004.
