Cowboys Kick Off Training Camp

New, Younger Invade Midwestern State University

When linebacker Dat Nguyen received one of the loudest ovations at the team's kickoff party Saturday, you know that there had been a lot of changes made to the team during the off-season.

Can you name five starters on offense? How about five starters on defense? Could you recognize most of the players out of uniform? What a difference a year makes.

"There's a lot of new faces, special teams coach Joe Avezzano said as players arrived for the opening of training camp at Midwestern State University. "We've got a lot of names to be learning."

"When the great ones leave, other great ones replace them ... history shows that. We just gotta find out who they are."

"Hopefully, they will put tape (with player's names) on their helmets again," safety Darren Woodson said jokingly.

Among the new kids on the block is quarterback Tony Banks who has some big shoes to fill in replacing future hall of fame quarterback Troy Aikman.

"There's always something to learn, Banks said. "One NFL offense is just like the next one. It's a matter of getting the intricacies down."

Even owner Jerry Jones is sporting a new look. Jones lost 55 pounds during the off-season.

Emmitt Smith Despite the new faces, running back Emmitt Smith (pictured, right), the only star remaining on the roster, is optimistic about the Cowboys' chances this season.

"On paper other teams may look better," Smith said. "But I ain't ever seen a paper play the game, the game still has to be played."

"And I think that's where we're going to have to let our actions speak louder than our words."

Second-year head coach Dave Campo said that his team may be young, but it's talented.

"I think this football team is more talented than what we had in '89 and '90," Campo said. "This football team has some experience factors that they've got to get through, but talent-wise, I feel very good about this young group."

Campo will begin finding what his team is made up as two-a-day practices start Sunday.
