SAN ANTONIO -- Dallas Cowboys' owner Jerry Jones says he may be building a young team for the future but that doesn't mean it will not be competitive this season.
Jones, in a one-on-one interview Sunday with KSAT 12 Sports, said that the Cowboys still have offensive weapons and that the defense will be better.
Jones does admit that replacing Troy Aikman will not be easy.
"It presents quite a challenge," Jones said. "We've had the luxury of having a quarterback like Troy for all the time I've been in the NFL."
Jones said that Tony Banks, who was acquired to replace Aikman, is a big "if" but said that Banks has the potential and the chance to be the next Cowboys' quarterback for a long time.
"He has arguably some of the best talents," Jones said. "Strong arm, big guy, he's won half of the games he's played."
Jones is hoping that Banks' experience and the fact that he will be playing for the Cowboys will help him prosper.
Jones said that Banks will have a group of talented wide receivers to throw to.
Joey Galloway and Rocket Ismail, both of whom suffered season-ending injuries last year, are 99 percent ready, Jones said.
Former San Antonio Clark and University of Texas standout Wayne McGarity is also healthy.
Jones hopes that the fast fleet of receivers and what he calls an offensive line that "may be one of the best", will open up running lanes for Emmitt Smith.
Jones said that his young defense will be better.

He said the defense will be more sound and will be a faster unit.
The Cowboys may be younger but they may not look as dramatically different as Jones himself (pictured, right) who lost 55 pounds during the off season.
Jones said that he's cutting back on what he's eating and hasn't drank any alcohol in about a year.
"Sometimes I look a little anemic, I may look a little pale, but I feel super."
