SAN ANTONIO -

At least nine suspected illegal immigrants are dead, after the van they were riding in, rolled over on the South Texas Border.

It happened on U.S. Highway 83 in Palmview around 10:30 p.m. on Tuesday, just west of McAllen.

Palmiview police said Wednesday that it's not clear what caused the crash. However, some witnesses reported that the after a traffic stop involving the U.S. Border patrol, the van just took off.

The Palmview Police Commander said the van was carrying 19 people from Mexico and that he believes they were all in the U.S. illegally.

Six others were injured in the wreck and two people who fled are in custody.

Two others are still on the run.

Police are trying to determine whether the driver is among the dead.

Three women have been treated and released to immigration authorities.

Three men remain in the hospital, but their condition is unknown at this time.

The Mexican Embassy announced Wednesday that its consulate in McAllen will help return the bodies of the nine suspected illegal immigrants back to Mexico.

An embassy spokesman said the consulate was in the process of contacting the victims' families and that most of the dead were from the southern state Oaxaca.
