SAN ANTONIO -- City leaders are urging residents to grab a paintbrush and wipe out graffiti in their neighborhoods on Saturday.
Residents and corporate citizens will hit the streets to paint over graffiti on dozens of public and private sites at Graffiti Wipeout! Day.
"How can we attract businesses and corporations if this is what you see?" District 6 City Councilwoman Delicia Herrera said while driving through a neighborhood Monday that had graffiti sprayed on numerous fences and buildings.
Citizens and organizations interested in volunteering for the event should call their City Council office or call 311 to sign up.
The event begins at 9:00 a.m. and ends at 11:00 a.m. with a free lunch, entertainment and door prizes for volunteers at Camargo Park.
Herrera also said another way to get rid of graffiti year-round is by turning in taggers.
The city currently has a pilot program that allows kids to report taggers, who are then visited by police at their homes. Police officers then talk with parents about the problem in hopes of preventing further tagging.
