SAN ANTONIO -- If Bexar County Precinct 4 Commissioner Tommy Adkisson has his way, hundreds of jail inmates will be living in tents.
Adkisson said Monday that a tent city would help alleviate jail overcrowding.
"This is not a picnic, this is not a fun place to be, and this is not a place to chill and sit in there and talk with all the thugs about how to rip us off," Adkisson said.
Adkisson said that inmates don't deserve to have air conditioning, TV and three square meals a day. He wants them outside in a secure area.
"What we'd like to do is make it a little less inviting for those who use our jail as a hotel," he said.
Adkisson plans to visit a tent city in Maricopa County, Ariz., within the next month to see how such a facility operates.
Current state laws would need to be changed before Bexar County could get approval for a tent city.
