A 4-year-old girl who was allegedly beaten by her mother and her mother's boyfriend has died from her injuries.

Kayla Garcia was taken to a San Antonio hospital Monday. Police have said the girl had bruises and a severe head injury. They also believe burn marks on her body may have come from cigarettes.

She died at the hospital around 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, family members said.

Police arrested the girl's mother, 20-year-old Melanie Garcia, and her boyfriend, 23-year-old Matthew Carrillo, on charges of injury to a child.

The charges against them could be upgraded to capital murder.
