Adoption ceremony provides early Christmas gift
23 Bexar County families make adoptions official
"(It's) the best gift ever,” responded a teary Kerri Butler, when asked about her newly adopted son Christian.
It may be a week early, but for Butler, her Christmas gift could not have come soon enough.
"I can't even describe it; just complete joy," said Butler.
The joy is courtesy of 20-month-old Christian, a youngster who needed a home.
"We just had it in our hearts to take a huge leap of faith and step out. We prayed. He just kind of came to us nine months ago, which was kind of funny,” said Butler.
On Friday, the Butlers officially adopted the newest addition to their family. They joined many more families with similar stories at the Bexar County December Adoption Day Ceremony, Friday morning.
Bexar County is no stranger adoptions; in fact, it has the distinction of leading not only the state, but the nation in adoptions.
On Friday, 37 children were adopted to 23 families.
That includes the Reyes family, who spent the past two years attempting to adopt their granddaughter, Arianna. As of Friday, they now have the Christmas gift they have been waiting for.
"It’s a wonderful gift. Yes, we couldn’t ask for more,” said Grandmother Alicia Reyes.
Neither could Samira Washington, who decided to give her three nephews, ages 4, 5 and 7, the gift of a forever home.
"It is a big gift to just bring it all together and make it happen,” said Washington.
It is a Christmas gift that the many new parents who attended, will likely cherish for a lifetime.
"He’s such a gift. He’s incredible and very loved--lots of love and he knows it,” added Butler.
