EDINBURG, Texas -

Over the past four days, U.S. Border Patrol agents seized more than 6 tons of marijuana and arrested an illegal alien, who has a prior conviction for a sex crime.

According to Border Patrol press release, one of the largest seizures occurred Friday near Escobares, Texas, when agents working near the Rio Grande saw several people carrying large bundles of marijuana.

When the smugglers noticed the agents approaching, they dropped the bundles and fled into the surrounding brush, leaving behind nearly 900 pounds of marijuana, the release stated.

In total, From Friday through Monday, agents seized more than 12,000 pounds of marijuana, with an estimated value of more than $9.6 million, the release stated.

The sex offender, who is a national of Guatemala, was arrested Sunday near Madero, Texas. The agents determined the man was in the United States illegally and took him to the station for processing.

At the station agents learned the man had been convicted in California on a charge of a sex-related crime with a minor. He will be processed for removal to his country of origin, the release stated.
