Aiport looks to improve rental car service

SAN ANTONIO -

The San Antonio International Airport is already in line for some major renovations, but now aviation directors are looking at improving the rental car service at the airport.

As it stands now, rental car companies in San Antonio are spread out, some located within the airport, some near the airport and some far away, leaving many customers confused.

"We need to improve that customer service level," said Frank Miller, Director of Aviation. "The customer experience of renting cars at the airport. There are a lot of people who fly into San Antonio either on business or conventions, or they're just here to visit. We need to make that experience a lot better."

Miller said they are talking about a consolidated facility for all rental car services and they are thinking about building it right across from the terminal building, meaning customers would just have to walk across the street to get a car.

"I think that would be a great idea," said Golda Isbuatche, a rental car customer. "It would cut down on the time of having to jump in there, drive over there, especially when you are in a hurry as opposed to waiting for the shuttle. I mean its efficient, but it would be much better if it was closer."

However, the construction of a centralized facility would come at a price.

Airport officials are thinking of issuing a customer facility charge of $4.50 a day for a rental car at the airport.

That fee would come back to the airport to build a construct a central facility, but it would only apply to airport customers.

"For local residents of San Antonio, if they have to rent a car because their car was in an accident or if they go to one of the other rental car companies around the city, those transactions are not subject to the CFC. (Customer Facility Charge) We are talking exclusively of airport related transactions."

However, Miller said Wednesday that it's still early and that they are still in the process of figuring out financing, design development and construction.

He said it could be 3 to 5 years before there is anything in place.
