Area lake recognized as one of the best 'unknown' bass fishing locations
Lake Dunlap continues to see large hauls
When boating across Lake Dunlap, it is obvious the reservoir is not large. However, the fish that have been coming of the lake, as of late, are.
"The fishing has been phenomenal, especially bass fishing in this reservoir,” said John Findeisen, a fisheries biologist with Texas Parks and Wildlife.
Texas Parks and Wildlife have long monitored the lake that sits just east of New Braunfels and recently recognized it as one of the best “unknown” bass-fishing lakes in the state.
"It’s almost like a buffet table for these bass in here,” said Findeisen. “They have a variety of different species [to feed on] and a large abundance of them."
Add in a varied habitat across the small lake and good genetics from an introduction of Florida Largemouth Bass in the late 1970s, and the lake has become a good place to catch large fish.
Just last month, a 13-pound Largemouth bass was caught by an Austin-area resident.
Dunlap does not often receive as much publicity as the other well-known lakes like Amistad, Choke, and Falcon because of its small size. It is only measures 410 total acres.
Still, serious anglers have long known its potential.
"It’s pretty awesome,” said San Antonian Ruben Reyes, who has fished the lake for almost a decade. "The reason I like it here is because it’s closer.”
"I think a lot of people are just keeping this quiet right now,” added Findeisen.
That included angler David Thomas, who was not worried should newcomers flock to the lake.
"You can let all these cats come from other places, but you got to know the spots,” said a joking Thomas, who has fished the lake for nearly a decade.
While Largemouth bass are the most fished species in the lake, it also boasts a variety of other fish species including Crappe, Sunfish, and catfish.
