Armless Herff Elementary student gets special gift
David Cortez, 7, born without arms, gets special bicyle
Students gathered outside of Herff Elementary School Thursday morning for what was orchestrated to look like a bicycle safety seminar.
But it was all a ruse to set up a special surprise for a special second-grader.
David Cortez, 7, was born with no arms and while he's learned to do quite a lot with his feet, there is one thing he can't do.
Cortez can't ride a bike -- or at least he couldn't, before Thursday.
Herff Elementary School Principal Traci Smith gathered all of the students, who were in on the surprise, cheered as Cortez's name was drawn in a rigged raffle for a bike helmet.
When Cortez told Smith he didn't have a bike to ride, Smith said, 'Oh yes, you do!"
That's when a special modified bicycle was revealed and met with a big smile from a grateful child.
