Arson suspected in fire at west San Antonio sports bar
Fire damages SteLoz Sports Bar on N. Zarzamora, gas cans found at scene
A popular West Side sports bar went up in flames Wednesday morning and San Antonio firefighters believe the blaze was intentionally set.
San Antonio fire crews were called to SteLoz Sports Bar on N. Zarzamora and Salinas around 3 a.m. and noticed heavy smoke coming from the building.
Firefighters put the fire out, but noticed the smell of gasoline and saw gas cans at the scene. Arson investigators were called to the scene but have not ruled on a cause.
"The bar's been here for about 30 years, so it's pretty familiar. A lot of people have grown up, and came and gone through the neighborhood, so they are familiar with the bar," Ruben Zuniga, who owns the bar, said.
He hoped to re-open the bar as soon as he could fix the roof.
"It's important to us to keep life in the neighborhood. You know, the west side is historic, and it's the heart of San Antonio. San Antonio was built from the West side," Zuniga said.
Zuniga said he could not think of anyone who would try to set the building on fire, but he did not rule it out.
Other business owners in the area, where there has been recent revitalization, were also interested in the cause of the fire.
"We know that we had a challenge this morning. We're going to bounce back, and band together, and help each other out," said Carlos Gonzalez, who recently opened a gas station across the street from SteLoz.
Gonzalez said he is proud to be among the new entrepreneurs on the west side, even though there are growing pains along with the growing opportunities.
