A cellphone scam targeting shoppers is gaining steam across the country just in time for the holidays.
According to the Better Business Bureau, a cell phone user receives a text from a random number saying they have won a $1,000 gift card from retailers such as Target, Best Buy or Walmart.
The text message then directs the cell phone user to a website where the individual can enter a code to claim their card.
However, after filling in the code, the site also asks for personal information that consists of a name, home address or email.
The Better Business Bureau says that information can lead to identity theft and warn consumers to be especially vigilant around the holidays.
Anyone who receives one of these text messages is asked to call The BBB.
