SAN ANTONIO -

Latonshia Lee-Alezander, 37, the woman accused of running down a family on Foster Road and killing two people, is not facing any charges at this time, according to a spokesman with the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office.

Detective Louis Antu said an investigation is still underway, particularly in connection with claims by a witness that Lee-Alezander may have been using a cell phone at the time of the crash.

"We did confiscate the phone. We have it in our custody. We're going to be looking at phone records and see if she was actually on the phone," Antu said. "She could've hung up and then she might have struck the pedestrians later."

Antu identified the family members who were killed as Jose Beltran, 30, and Eli Beltran, 3, believed to be a father and son. Adrian Beltran, 4, and Kristie Vergaare, 34, both were critically injured.

Witnesses told investigators it appeared Vergaare may have been pregnant. She and Jose Beltran are believed to be the parents of both children.

Antu said accident investigators were expected to return to the scene to reconstruct the crash.

“That’s normal in any fatality,” Antu said.

Although the official word at the time of the crash was that it was prompted by distracted driving, Antu said Friday morning that it was too soon to tell.

He said a determination on the cause of the crash, and whether the driver should face any criminal charges, will be made once the investigation is complete.

A relative who answered the door at the couple’s home Friday morning declined to comment, saying she would talk to all of the media at one time, possibly later in the day.
