Barbacoa spot, meat market rack up demerits

SAN ANTONIO -

One San Antonio business just barely passed their recent health inspection and another failed by a single point.

Pepe's Barbacoa #2 on Roosevelt just received 31 demerits, which is a failing score by one point. The inspector lists a handful of violations like:

  • Improper hand washing by employees.
  • Using a styrofoam cooler as a place to hold hot food.
  • Using household pesticides.
  • Not posting their report where people could see it.

The inspector's report says the last violation was corrected right away.
KSAT's Behind the Kitchen Door tried to call and ask a few more questions but the number at Pepe's #2 has been disconnected.

Culebra Super Meat Market is located on Old Pearsall Road. They received 30 demerits, which is a passing score, but is only considered 'acceptable' by Metro Health.
Their violations included:

  • A warning that employees preparing meat or any food item must wear hair restraints.
  • Water from the meat cooler was dripping onto raw meat.
  • A container of beans was at an unsafe 46 degrees.
  • The staff was told to clean blood off the floor.

An employee tells KSAT's Behind the Kitchen Door the meat cooler has been fixed and they are almost ready for Metro Health to come back and check things out.

The following restaurants just received perfect scores from Metro Health:

  • Bill Miller BBQ on Bitters Road.
  • The Carver Academy on Robinson Way.
  • Fred's Fish Fry on Nogalitos.
  • Schlotzsky's on Bandera Road.
  • Taqueria La Tapatia on Rigsby.
