Benefit concert held for Sandy Hook families at VFW Post 76
Proceeds to event go to families affected by shootings in December
A benefit concert was held at VFW Post 76 near downtown San Antonio on Friday.
The proceeds will go to the families affected by the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting last December.
Patricia Doria is the president of Heart to Heart for You, an organization that typically raises money for local families.
"The call that I got from God was to do something more," said Doria, who organized the event.
Friday night, the non-profit organization hosted the event for good reason.
"100 percent of proceeds will go to the school," said Doria. "It's going to help them defray the cost of headstones on their loved ones graves.
The evening featured local leaders like the chief of the San Antonio Police Department, as well as Megan Kursawe. She represented Sandy Hook Elementary and all the families who were hurt by the tragedy.
"They're very, very fragile right now, but they are doing well," said Kursawe. "They all wanted me to say thank and they are all grateful for your support."
The Sandy Hook Elementary tragedy is the second deadliest school shooting in American history.
Congressman Lloyd Doggett said the event, “does really speak well of our Bexar County values and our concern for others.”
Doggett also added the event prompted renewed debate on gun control.
"It's unfortunate at this late date congress has failed to act on universal background checks to reduce such violence in the future," said Doggett.
In case you missed Friday's event, you can still donate to the families in Newtown. You can visit Heart 2 Heart For You's website and make your donation. They will take donations for the families of Sandy Hook for the next 30 days.
